Each year, millions of high school seniors put an end to an important chapter in their lives to start the daunting journey of adulthood. In response to these stressful transitions, many people advise turning to Jesus, which is a powerful yet vague and confusing concept. Instead of overthinking it, sometimes the answer to similar, difficult challenges of life can start with something as simple as having breakfast.
In 2022, a group of concerned individuals collaborated to create an event known as Senior Breakfast. On Friday mornings at 7am in the second semester, seniors gather to share a complimentary meal and reflections on the Word of God. These breakfasts, held at Pancake House, not only teach students how to turn to God in their daily lives but also encourage their creation of future support groups and often create long lasting bonds. According to Slaveck Moraru, one of the Senior Breakfast leaders, “the conversations that you have and just the camaraderie that you build,” are some of its greatest aspects.
This seemingly simple event has various contributors, such as the singular anonymous donor who funds the entire initiative, the establishment that serves the meals while keeping in close relations to the organizers, and the two leaders themselves, Slaveck Moraru and Susanna Hoke. Collectively, their original purpose in creating this event was to “do something meaningful for the people that can help them grow in their relationship with God,” as stated by Mrs. Hoke.
Now in its fourth year, Senior Breakfasts continue to fulfill this goal by combining elements of community and faith to provide seniors with an approachable way to turn to God in uncertain situations.
