Athletics and faith are two important aspects of life that take great passion and perseverance, finding balance between the two will give you the strength to perform well in your sport and further your relationship with God. God gave us bodies with athletic abilities and competitive spirits so that we could use them, and competing to the best of our ability is a great way to glorify him.
Another way we glorify God is by spending time with him and building a relationship with him. Varsity football player Simon Vander Wel ’25 takes his faith very seriously and makes it a goal to spend time in the word every night. Even small things like daily quiet time will result in growing your relationship with God, which in turn will help you in your sport, Spending time with God gives Vander Wel “the peace of mind to play with a clear head and clear conscience.” Vander Wel says, “God supports my effort for excellence which allows me to hit harder, play longer, and be more focused.” When you walk with God and grow your faith, you learn to give the result to him; then, there is nothing left to do but play your hardest, without fear.
